DEVELOPING GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES FOR PUBLIC NGO PARTNERSHIPS
As a Fulbright Scholar, Stephen Block traveled to Moscow State University of Management and advanced the academic study of nongovernmental organizations with his Russian colleagues. With the participation of three Russian professors, Block coordinated a special four-course program comprised of economics, governance, marketing and the management of nongovernmental organizations (NGO’s). In addition to teaching and coordinating the series, Block engaged in lectures to clarify and contrast beliefs and approaches, providing an American perspective. Through his contributions, students gained an appreciation of cross-cultural differences in the application of management principles.
Block also participated in a national conference with professors involved in creating an NGO curriculum. His presentation focused on the approach used to develop a nonprofit management curriculum at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver.
“I appreciated the scholarly recognition, but the real sense of honor was being selected to be part of a program dedicated to developing international understanding. The program opened the door for developing professional relationships and lasting personal friendships. As a result of my Fulbright experience, I was given an opportunity to author a textbook with a Russian colleague. I feel proud that the book is being used in universities throughout the Russian Federation.” - Stephen Block, PhD, School of Public Affairs
