Community Service and Public Affairs


The Community Service & Public Affairs pathway offers a variety of courses meant to build the skills and experiences needed to practice communication for the common good. This pathway offers the opportunity for students to enhance leadership skills and practice how to handle conflict in real-world situations. Whether you’re interested in working in the public sector or for a private organization that helps fight for social justice, this pathway can set you up to make a difference in your community.

Media & Cultural Studies


The media contributes a lot to both how we communicate and how we perceive communications in the modern world. The Media & Cultural Studies pathway examines how a broad range of communication technologies impact our cultural, personal and professional lives. Whether you’re interested in a career in a media-related field or you want to learn how to be a more critical media consumer, this pathway will help you get there. We’ll examine media from contexts including public relations, advertising, politics and public advocacy, among others.

Global & Intercultural Communication


Are you interested in learning about communication from a global level? The Global & Intercultural Communication pathway is perfect for that. Not only will you learn the fundamentals of communication, but you’ll also delve deep into the importance of communication on a global scale and discover how it affects international and intercultural relationships. If you’re interested in travel or working for a global organization, this the pathway for you.


Health Communication


Communication is of the utmost importance in the health care field. This pathway helps students understand how health communications are cultivated, negotiated and understood across a wide range of communication contexts. This is a great pathway for students who are interested in a career in health and medicine.


Other Options: Add a Minor in Communication or a Certificate

In addition to arranging the communication major coursework in pathways, CU Denver offers a minor in communication and two certificate programs at the BA level, both of which can be earned online as of Fall 2018. If you're interested in specializing your degree further, you can choose to pair your major with a certificate in mediation or strategic communication.

Unsure whether you’re interested in a fully online degree program? Maybe you’re more interested in just taking a couple of classes here or there online. No problem! We’re happy to help you design a hybrid degree program that allows you to take some classes on campus and others online.


Timeline

This course was designed to help you combine your knowledge of communication concepts, principles and practices with hands-on experience in a communication-related field. You will also walk away with the ability to create a professional portfolio and critically assess your knowledge and skills, the materials you'll need to build your professional portfolio and the ability to identify your strengths and weaknesses.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication requires a total of 120 credits, including 39 Communication credits (13 courses) consisting of:

  • 12 credits comprised of required core courses
  • 24 credits comprised of Pathway Areas courses
  • 3 credits comprised of an exit course

At least 21 of the 39 Communication credit hours must be upper-division (3000-4000 level) courses.

In addition to the required communication courses, CU Denver has a set of core university requirements for all undergraduates, including courses in:

  • Humanities
  • Social sciences
  • Behavioral sciences
  • Natural/physical sciences
  • Mathematics (competency can be demonstrated through testing or coursework)
  • Writing (competency can be demonstrated through testing or coursework)

Interested in earning academic credit while actually working in the communication field? An internship can help you do so! CU Denver’s communication internship course is designed to assist you in applying your accumulated communication knowledge and skills, in gaining practical, curriculum-related experience, and in preparing you to excel in professional, real-world settings.


Tuition and Fees

Investing in your future is a big decision. However, becoming a fully online student at CU Denver is an affordable option with discounted tuition rates for non-resident, fully online students. And of course, you will save money not having to drive to campus! Tuition and fees are based largely on the class that you enroll in.

Courses

Courses at CU Denver are offered three times a year — fall, spring, and summer. Not all courses are available every semester. For most programs, courses last 15 weeks, plus one week for finals. This is a big commitment, but we believe the extra time you spend dedicated to your studies pays off!

COMM 1001 — Public Speaking 
Theory and practice of presentational speaking in a variety of contexts to accomplish goals of asserting individuality, building community, securing adherence, discovering knowledge and belief, and offering perspectives.

COMM 1011 — Fundamentals of Communication
Studies communication theory and application. Topics include communication models, interpersonal communication and the concept of self, nonverbal communication, message preparation and analysis, and decision making.

COMM 1021 — Introduction to Media Studies
Explores the role of contemporary media in shaping our sense of ourselves and our world. The class surveys a broad array of critical approaches to understanding media.
